Rick Warren starts out his best-selling book, The Purpose-Driven Life, with a profoundly simple – and profoundly wise line; IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU! That, of course, totally contradicts the ad for Korean Air, It’s ALL About You! And it contradicts a ‘Selfie’ world view. The problem with a ‘Selfie’ narcissist, It’s all about me world view, is that there’s no way to have a vision for your life. I mean, you can have one – but it will be difficult trying to recruit a team to follow your vision of you! Visions, by definition, are selfless. Visions are about what you’re going to do to make the world a better place – and make other’s lives better. The well-known phrase from Proverbs is, “Without a vision, people perish.” I would put it like this – without a vision – WE perish; we die a little at a time.
