Hotel – The Pink Crack

This is a video of us opening for Interpol at the Horseshoe Tavern back in 2002 or so.

We imploded in early 2004 after two good albums, impressive opening gigs, a few publicity coups, and kudos-worthy radio play on US college radio.

Sadly, our singer was a sociopath nut-job named Mark — but if you didn’t called him Jack, he’d lose his mind and freak out on stage like a child diva.

Mark-Jack was deeply terrified of success, and some of the tales are legend. Sadly, his legacy will always be throwing a temper tantrum at 3am in response to our friend, housemate, and all-round band cheerleader accidentally waking him up. He sent her flying across the room into a stack of recording equipment and I had to physically restrain him while we called the police.

Suffice to say, our last tour was a little awkward. Yes, we should have told him to FO right then and there, but it was all over when he fired the whole band via email the day after our last show… a live gig on CBC with Sarah Harmer. That was the 2nd-last episode of Jian Ghomeshi’s “Play”.

I absolutely intend to write a book about Hotel some day. Stories of failure are much more interesting than yet another Rolling Stones coffee table album.
